How to Journal (Without Turning It Into a Pinterest Mood Board)
So let’s talk about journaling.
It’s one of those things that everyone says is life-changing, but no one really tells you how to actually do it in a way that doesn’t feel like homework.
In my Discord community, this topic comes up a lot and while I’m not someone who journals daily like a monk, I do journal consistently enough to know this:
Every time I journal, I walk away with a clearer brain and better next steps.
Simple as that.
And that clarity is a cheat code for making better decisions, being less anxious, and actually moving forward.
First, What Even Is Journaling?
To me, journaling is just...
You, processing life on paper.
Or screen. Or voice memo. Doesn’t matter.
You can write it in Notion, Apple Notes, a ₹30 diary, a Google Doc, or whisper it into your iPhone like you are sending voice notes to God.
I have done all of them.
Whatever helps you dump your thoughts and get clarity, that’s journaling.
Why I Journal (And Why You Might Want To)
Two main reasons:
To track progress
To clear my mental fog and figure out what the hell to do next
That’s it.
When I look back at old journal entries… like, 6 months or 1 year ago…it blows my mind.
“Wait, that was my goal back then?”
“Damn, I used to think that way?”
“I was really spiraling over that??”
It helps me zoom out, realign, and adjust my systems.
And when I’m stuck, unsure, overwhelmed, I just write.
Sometimes nonsense. Sometimes genius. Sometimes both in the same paragraph.
But the act of writing it all out is what pulls the real answers out of your head.
How to Actually Journal (No Aesthetic Required)
Let’s make it easy:
You don’t need a fancy pen.
You don’t need a structured template.
You don’t need to write “5 things you’re grateful for” every damn time (unless that helps you, then cool).
Instead:
Free flow.
Let your thoughts spill out.
Write whatever’s in your head.
Even if it’s stupid. Even if it’s “I don’t know what to write.”
Write that.
Because once you get past the surface-level noise, your real thoughts will start showing up.
Here's How It Usually Goes For Me:
I start writing random stuff.
That slowly leads me to the real question floating in my brain.
I write about that.
Clarity starts forming.
I feel better.
Bonus tip: play some calming music. For some reason, it just helps.
Listen to this (I love the initial melody)
What Should You Journal About?
Whatever’s on your mind.
Seriously. Don’t overthink it.
Examples:
“What do I want to achieve in 2026?”
“Why do I feel stuck this week?”
“What did I eat today?” (Yes, even that. Let your brain breathe.)
Write until you find the question that’s been running in the background of your mind.
Then answer it. Even if the answer changes tomorrow.
That’s fine. You’re evolving.
Journaling is for processing, not perfection.
A Note on Gratitude Prompts
You don’t need to list 5 gratitude things every day.
Instead, try writing something like:
“Here’s what I was 5 years ago. Here’s who I am now.”
Boom… gratefulness unlocked.
No template needed.
TL;DR:
Journaling isn’t some magical self-care ritual for the ultra-organized.
It’s just your brain dumping its browser tabs onto paper so you can finally think.
Do it however you like:
Notebook. Voice memo. Notes app. Napkin. Doesn’t matter.
Just start.
Be honest.
Don’t judge your thoughts.
Write until you feel lighter.
And read it back when you forget how far you’ve come.
That’s the real magic.

If this helped you at all, maybe journal about it 👀
